Patio Basics

For you to have a really cool home, you should pay attention to all parts of your home. This means that you have to see to it even your patio looks great. That is if you have one. If you have this ion your home, you would surely not want it to look unattended to. Plus, a nice layout of a patio means that you would have that place to chill out during summer.

A clean looking patio is a good place to read a book or just hang out with your family and friends. You can have a great time in a well-designed patio just sipping tea or coffee. Thus, you should pay attention how you design your patio. It should not be too cluttered with this and that chair. You should pick out patio chairs which will look great with your table and whatnot.

You should also pay attention to how you decorate your lawn. It is a good thing to have a plan first and then work on that slowly. You may not get what you want the first time but you can "fine-tune" it so that it will look as you have planned it to be.

Also, do not be afraid to experiment with your own ideas. After all, you will be the one paying for it and the one who will spend most time in it.

The Beauty Of Red And Beige

Your living room is very important to you right? We can go through all the reasons why it is important but we will end up agreeing that your bedroom really is very important. Thus let us make the long story short and see what idea I have come up with for this post.

Well, this is about combining the color of red and beige. Both colors have their own appeal and therefore can be used alone to create a handsome bedroom. But let's face it, even if you love the color red, you would not use the color on every inch of your bedroom, unless you live in the world of Dick Tracy.

Anyway, it is a good idea to use red accented with beige or the other way around. The two colors contrast each other that they create an elegant look. You can try this yourself in your home if you want to experiment. Use red pillows and beige bed sheets and you will see what I am talking about. The beauty of the two colors together creates a striking elegance that would make you want to just dive under the covers and get a good night's sleep.

Oh, that reminds me, gotta clean the bedroom now. Be back soon. Oh, and I would also recommend a modern fireplace screen for your living room. It looks really good.

Cost-Friendly Bathroom

Redesigning a bathroom is not as easy as redesigning the living room right? After all, you only need to rearrange the furniture in your living room to change its looks. But I will not agree that it is very hard to give a bathroom a facelift. In fact, there are some easy and inexpensive ways that you can freshen up your bathroom.

For example, if you have a bathroom which looks like this, you only need a couple of brightly colored towels to change the appearance of your bathroom. Choose towels with winter and spring themes and use them in conjunction with the season. When choosing towels for a monotone bathroom, it is recommended that you use towels with geometric pattern of loud colors.

Shower curtains are also interchangeable so you can create a lot of design with that. You can either change your shower curtains to complement or contrast your towel of the season.

Also, use mirrors. Mirrors are commonly found in bathrooms of course, but you can use it to design the room and not just for something to check your reflection on. Mirrors reflect light which in turns makes a room look bigger than it actually is. What that means is that if you have a mirror in your bathroom, it is one good way of making it look un-oppressing even if it is only a small space. Plus, using mirrors on bathrooms is just like using modern candle holders in your bedroom.

Like Reading?

If you are a bookworm like me, chances are, you have a small collection of bedside readings that seem to clutter up your bedroom. Good for you if you can afford to build a library of your own. But for those who cannot afford to have a room in their home dedicated to books, bookshelves and night table serves as the home for books.

So, for those struggling to keep those books in good order it would be good if you have a dedicated reading corner. You can easily make one if you really want to. All you need is a table that will be dedicated to holding your books. It does not need to be large as you have bookshelves for most of your books.

What it should have are drawers where you can safely keep your books. You would also need a comfortable chair. For this, consider the position that you prefer while reading a book. You surely want to be comfortable while reading so use a chair that would fit our preferred position. A bean bag chair is a good choice especially if you have a contemporary design in your home.

If you like reading in your bed, it is recommended that you use a small bookshelf as a bedside table.

Feng Shui Flow

It is not as easy as you think to design a home using the aid of Feng Shui. One should study this ancient and complicated art before he or she can claim that she is an expert on the said field. But even if you do not study said philosophy, you can still redecorate your home using certain principles of Feng Shui.

If you want to try your hands on Feng Shui designing, it would take a lot of patience and much thinking. Since they have this concept about the flow of energy, you can translate it to the flow of traffic or the path of people around your home. Visualize your home and see how easy or hard it is to go from one point to another without many turns.

It would take a lot of time perfecting it as there would be a lot of things that you have to consider unless you have an empty room for a living room. For example, you might move a couch so that you can have a short walk from the front door to the kitchen beyond the living room. But by doing so, you will be taking a longer route if you want to go to the second floor of your home. You should have patience and the right motivation.

I shared this tip with you since I know that there are people out there who are into this kind of thing. But if this little experiment does not work for you, or you got tired of moving furniture day after day, you can just hire a Feng Shui expert eh?

Cool Glass Effect

If you don't have dogs or any pets in the house, does not have children, and are looking to make your home look more elegant bordering on enchanting, I think I have the right project for you.

In this project, you will need a tall glass urn, a chandelier which roughly has the same circumference as the opening of the urn, and a glass tabletop. The urn will be the centerpiece of this design and when completed, this project can even be the centerpiece of your home.

First, find any spot in your living room which is not in the way of home traffic. This is to be sure that your creation will not be knocked off. Then, when you have found that ideal spot, place your glass urn there. This is where the magic starts, place anything inside the urn which reminds you of the present season. For example, you can use a lot of colored pebbles in there for spring. It is yours so you can use anything that you fancy. But, I would recommend anything shiny as it can create amazing lighting patterns.

After you have filled the urn with any design you want, place the glass table top. Then, hang the chandelier with the glass shades just a foot or so away from the glass tabletop. And there you are, a simple way to make your room look more appealing

Combining Styles

It is easy to design a home using one theme. For example, you like traditional designs, and your partner also likes them, you will have no problem in decorating your home. But what if one likes traditional decors and the other one favors modern styling? Well, it is still possible to combine these two themes.

For example, in the living room, the heart of the home, you can create a design inspired by traditional and modern styles. One scenario for this is to use modern couch preferably in white or beige. To make the room appealing, use earth toned paint on the walls. This arrangement would make the wall and the couch more visible.

You can add more to that by using throw pillows in pairs. Every pair should consist of one modern and one traditional colored throws. The pair will contrast each other thus making them look more visible and appealing. Then, you can use an earth-toned center table which will contrast with the couch. On top of the table, you can use a contemporary vase and real flowers to add more contrast.

Remember that you can either have your decors complement or contrast each other. And since it is not easy for contemporary decors to complement traditional ones and vice-versa, it is of course wise to let them contrast each other.

There it is guys. If you find yourself in a situation where you need to combine traditional and contemporary designs, you might want to give that idea a try.

Kitchen Decorating

The kitchen as we all know is an important place in the house. It is where one prepares the food for the family and whatnot. Although the kitchen houses those cooking utensils and different appliances, it does not mean that it has to look too clinical. By that, I mean you can beautify your kitchen as well as any other room in your home.

In the past, the working triangle is very popular. It consists of three works stations, one involving the refrigerator, another, the sink, and another for the cooking range. If you are going to design your kitchen today, refrain from using the triangle philosophy. Instead, create sections or station where you can clean up, cook, store food, and any work you get done in the kitchen.

Also, you should not have your kitchen designed just for you. Usually, the wife gets to design the kitchen, and if the wife calls in a help, designers would talk with the wife of course and the wife alone if the husband says he does not care how it is designed. Therefore, the designer would design a kitchen for the wife. But what if the husband is taller than his wife? That would certainly make him uncomfortable on kitchen chairs brought into place for his wife. So it would be better if the designer has to design the kitchen considering all the needs of the whole family.

There you are, just a couple of design tips for your kitchen. That's all for now folks.

Feng Shui And Lighting

We all know that Feng Shui is considered by many to be of great help in improving the design of any establishment, whether it is a home or an office. But you might be worried about the cost of hiring a Feng Shui expert or is unable to find one. Worry not as you can use Feng Shui all by yourself. It is really easy if you have the right mindset and a good resource for Feng Shui tips.

The World Wide Web has crawling with information about decorating your home with the aid of Feng Shui. There are blogs like mine which offer designing tips for free. Here are some pointers which I have picked up over the years from colleagues and other people who had their homes designed with the help of the Oriental philosophy of design.

If you are familiar with Feng Shui then you surely know that it is about increasing the energy flow called Chi and creating a relaxed atmosphere. Here goes my first tip: use accent lightings to soften up the sharp corners in any room in your home.

Another tip for you my dear reader concerning lighting fixtures is this: chandeliers should not be placed over a chair, or a chair should never be put directly under a chandelier. This does not only enhances energy flow but also reduces the risk of a chandelier falling on somebody which can cause severe injury or even death.

There you are, just a couple of tips for now. Tune in for some more tips next time.

Feng Shui And Interior Design

What is Feng Shui and how come it always comes up along with home design or something like that? If you are wondering, then let us shed some light on what it really is and what is it all about.

Feng Shui pronounced "fung shway" in English was known in the past as Kan-Yu which means "The Law of Heaven and Earth". Feng Shui schools teach that it is the ancient Chinese art of placement and arrangement of space to achieve harmony with the environment. Although it sounds as easy as keeping your new car away from the sight of your nosy neighbors, it really is not. I mean, if it was being taught thousands or hundreds of years ago, how come only few are considered Feng Shui masters or whatever they call them.

Supporters and those who practice it claim that with the help of this technique, they can bring better aura to a home. If a business establishment is designed with the aid of Feng Shui, chances are, it will prosper, or so they say. Since there is no way one can measure the real effect of Feng Shui on the fate of an establishment or home, it is impossible to turn everyone into believers. In fact, critics of the Chinese practice call it pseudoscience.

But then, there is nothing wrong about trying something new. Check out a home designed with Feng Shui aid and see if you like it. If it looks good to you, then maybe it's time to call that Feng Shui expert.
